Our Fabrics

Mudcloth

Mudcloth is a handmade cotton textile that is traditionally dyed with fermented mud. This practice originated in Mali, West Africa but has also been practised in India for centuries. Authentic mudcloth takes two to three weeks to make by applying one to two coats of colour-rich mud to undyed cloth.  Our mudcloth cushion covers are 100% cotton and produced by local artisans in Jaipur.

Dori Embroidery

The word “Dori” is believed to have been derived from the Hindi language and roughly translates to “thread.” This form of embroidery work is extremely versatile, owing to the vast variety of colours and stitching styles. A distinct feature of Dori embroidery is the apparent thickness of the thread that gives this embellishment an almost 3D appearance. Our cushion covers with Dori embroidery have been handstitched by local artisans in Jaipur and include a careful combination of refined silk and cotton.

Dabu Printing

Originating from Rajasthan, Dabu printing is an ancient hand block printing technique. It is a labour-intensive process that requires several steps; first the cotton is washed to remove any impurities. Designs are then hand printed on the fabric using blocks dipped in dye. After this mud resist is used, which makes the print so unique. After printing is done, the fabric is dried in the sun before being dyed with colour and washed again.

Kilim

Our hand-woven Kilim cushion covers are handmade by artisans in Jaipur following an old technique practised for centuries by tribes in rural Rajasthan. The cushion covers are made with a slit weave technique, which refers to the gap left between two blocks of colour. Our cushion covers are produced by tightly interweaving the thread to create a flat surface with no pile. Each cushion cover is unique and made by hand on a loom, using threads of knitted or woven jute.

Block Printing

Block printing refers to the printing technique of pressing and stamping fabric with carved wooden blocks filled with colour. Our artisans in Jaipur take the block print designs and print them onto the cotton napkins. However, the block printing process goes beyond pressing blocks onto fabric. Many steps are involved, from carving the wooden blocks to preparing the fabric, mixing dyes and applying the finishing touches. Block printing requires artistry, skill and patience. It is the sum of these tasks that produce our gorgeous block-printed napkins.

Care Instructions

All Khajaana products are handmade and should be treated kindly. Due to their handcrafted nature, some imperfections may exist. The first few washes should be done by hand using cold water or dry cleaned. As with any product, handmade or otherwise, colours may fade slightly over time so we suggest not placing cushion covers in direct sunlight.
